First-Class/Full-Time Permit for Professional Teaching (Alternative Education Program)
Summary of Requirements
A First Class/Full Time Permit is a two-year permit issued to those employed in the West Virginia public school system who do not meet the requirements for the Professional Teaching Certificate. You can apply for this permit if:
You are enrolled, in good standing, in an alternative state-approved educator preparation program such as Option 3 or Option 4
You have passed all West Virginia Board of Education-required Praxis exams
The county Superintendent has determined you are the most qualified applicant for the position
When you have successfully completed your alternative educator preparation program, you must pass all West Virginia Board of Education-required exams to apply for a professional certificate.
Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202)
Be at least 18 years old
Be employed in a West Virginia public school system
Have recommendation from the county Superintendent
Initial Application
For your initial application, you must:
Hold a bachelor's degree with a qualifying GPA from an accredited college or university
Be enrolled in an alternative state-approved educator preparation program such as Option 3 or Option 4
Have passed West Virginia Board of Education-required Praxis exams
Obtain the signature of the designated college or university official to verify your enrollment
